Skank Bloc Bologna: Alternative Art Spaces Since 1977

ITALIAN COUNCIL Edizione XI (2022); Principal investigator (Pi): Francesco Maria Spampinato

Skank Bloc Bologna: Alternative Art Spaces Since 1977 is a volume edited by Roberto Pinto and Francesco Spampinato that reconstructs the history of nonprofit exhibition spaces in Bologna from 1977 to the present. Whether individual initiatives, cooperative enterprises or social centers, these spaces have produced a true “Bologna model,” peculiar both in comparison with the situation in other Italian cities and on an international scale. The book’s title recalls a 1978 song by the English post-punk band Scritti Politti, emblematic of the international perception of Bologna as an epicenter of political agitation and cultural innovation. The volume includes historical-theoretical essays, interviews with the founding members of the spaces in question, valuable archival visual documents, and an infographic map reconstructing the genealogy of the phenomenon. The historical spaces covered include Traumfabrik, Cassero, Neon, LINK and Campo delle Fragole.
